re: Thanks Bro.

Last night I received the following email through my blog, referring to the Flash version of Duck Hunt that I built a few years back:

From: thanksbro@gmail.com

You know, it’s sort of annoying when people get arrogant and try to put in some terrible protection.

com.joshbuhler.games.utils.TheftBlock.checkURL("www.joshbuhler.com", this);

I’m sure anyone who wanted to host your game could just as easily decompile it as I did. I only did it to put it on a flash drive, as well. Having your name on the main screen isn’t enough?

Huh? A few things:

foreach($data as $donnie => $marie) {

by Josh on Jun.24, 2005, under Development, Web, wtf?!

Last night I was working on a side project some of us at mediaRAIN have been working on, and I came across the snippet of code below. It’s from the NuSoap php libraries, in nusoap.php, around line 4423.

Looks like Donny & Marie have found a new line of work.

Now, I’m guilty of using iterators & other throwaway variables like bob and randy, so I can’t really point any fingers. I guess next time I’ll just have to start using more famous pairs though: $batman & $robin, $starsky & $hutch, etc. I mean, everyone uses bob, or foo.

I really found this more amusing than anything, so it’s not a complete wtf?!. Just something to wake you up and make you laugh when you’re just about to fall asleep at the keyboard again.

It came from the search logs…

Just a quick Friday posting - I’d like to present some of the more interesting search keywords I’ve found in my search logs. For the most part, it’s pretty normal stuff that I’d expect:

However, some of the more unusual items include:

And of course, my favorite: bug bites on butt

The Best Naming Convention, EVER!

by Josh on Apr.20, 2005, under Development, Flash, wtf?!

(I’ve omitted the client’s name in order to protect the not-so-innocent.)

In developing a project for one of our clients, we needed access to some of the .fla files that the client had already created for portions of the site.

Now, sometimes, the source files we get from clients aren’t always put together the best way possible. The client will usually have someone in-house that has used Flash before, and they try their best. You get the swf, and it seems to work out ok. But then, you get the .fla, and about die looking at the contents. I’m sure we’ve all had experience with this before.

When the Library to this particular .fla was opened up, we soon discovered the Greatest Naming Convention Ever! Look how beautifully it was organized. By looking at the name, you can obviously tell what each symbol is without clicking on it. Later on, a convention of “lv-help”+asffe, “lv-help”+qwrea, etc. was established, adding even more clarity to things.

Now, I’m not in the position to be setting standards or anything, but if I could suggest that we all start using this system, the world could be a much, much better place.

Thank me by giving someone else a discount?

by Josh on Mar.18, 2005, under Random

Just driving to work this morning, and heard a radio ad from a local car dealership that seemed kinda odd to me. The ad mentioned how great the sales were in February, and that they had sold hundreds of cars last month. So, to thank everyone for the great month, the dealership was offering “huge discounts!” where you could by a car “at employee cost!” And of course, this can only happen once a year, when the sales managers allow it.

But then I started to think about it from the point of view of someone who had just purchased a car from them last month: “wait… I bought a car last month, and didn’t get a discount. So, they’re thanking me for my purchase by giving someone else a discount? Why don’t I get the discount? Thanks guys.”

Just one of those random things I think about now and then…
