Own A Piece of Movie History…
by Josh on Jul.06, 2005, under Random

Say… Darth Vader’s scars?
For a mere $5000, you can own your very own piece of Anakin Skywalker. The auction house Profiles in History has released their latest catalog, featuring a ton of original props from the Star Wars movies. You could pickup copies of the script in various drafts, some Chewbacca teeth, and some spare Yoda parts. (The head pieces look like Yoda fell into the lava instead of Anakin).
The catalog is pretty big, and is downloadable in four pdfs, with the Star Wars stuff beginning in part 2 of the catalog. Plan ahead, and get your holiday shopping done early - assuming you have cash to burn, and the person receiving would appreciate a severed Greedo antenna.

Lego Star Destroyer - Street Fighter Salsa
by Josh on Jun.30, 2005, under Random
Just a few short videos good for killing a couple minutes of time:
Lego Star Destroyer
These two folks built the Lego Star Destroyer and used a webcam to document the 10-hour process, snapping a frame every 5 seconds to create a stop motion movie. The video is about 3-4 minutes long, but it’s pretty fun to watch. Lego Star Destroyer Build (divX)
Street Fighter Salsa Dancing
Two contestants in a salsa dance competition using Street Fighter as their theme. They went beyond just the costumes, and even worked in some Street Fighter special moves into their dance: Street Fighter Salsa (WMV)

And one last quick one found by Andy at the office, Star Wars: Episode XII (QuickTime)
Programmer, or Serial Killer?
by Josh on Jun.23, 2005, under Flash, Random, Web
Just in case nobody has seen this yet, this is a short flash game to test your ability in determining if the photo of the person you’re shown is of a serial killer, or a programmer.
Programming Language Inventor, or Serial Killer?
I only got 4 out of 10 right, which according to the game apparently means that I shouldn’t be involved in any sort of IT hiring process.

If you have a blog of your own, take the MIT Weblog Survey. It only takes about five minutes, and you’ll help make the world a better place.

I didn’t know that Yoda liked Pepsi that much.
How to write Unmaintainable code
by Josh on Apr.27, 2005, under Development, Flash
As a followup to The Best Naming Convention, Ever!, I now present to you instruction on “How to write Unmaintainable Code”
Tips include:
- Buy a copy of a baby naming book and you’ll never be at a loss for variable names. Fred is a wonderful name, and easy to type.
- Use foreign language dictionaries as a source for variable names. For example, use the German punkt for point. Maintenance coders, without your firm grasp of German, will enjoy the multicultural experience of deciphering the meaning.
- Use _ and __ as identifiers.
I (could) see my house from here!
by Josh on Apr.05, 2005, under Random
Looks like Google has added satellite photos to it’s map service. After finding the location you want on the map, click the “Satellite” button in the top right to view a satellite photo of the address.
I tried finding my house, but it looks like the picture was taken before it was built, so all you get is an empty field where it should be. So instead, I’ll link you to the Happiest Place on Earth
Gaming @ Flashforward
by Josh on Apr.04, 2005, under Flash, Gaming
While at Flashforward next week, I’d love to get together with some of of you during some free time. Anyone looking for a game of Metroid Prime:Hunters on Nintendo DS? I’m curious to see how many of us at FF will have either an NDS or PSP. Or even their entire consoles for some Halo or Mario Kart action.
My IE-free PC
by Josh on Feb.21, 2005, under Random
Just bought a new Windows XP machine last week to run a few Windows-only apps, and so that I have a PC for testing purposes, and set it up over the weekend. In trying to protect it as much as possible, I’ve decided to make sure that Internet Explorer runs as little as possible.

Little bit of geek news… The text for the opening crawl of Episode III has been posted on StarWars.com. This is exciting news around MediaRain as May 19, 2005 has been designated as a holiday at the office.
