Over the weekend I took some time and ported my Duck Hunt game to work on the Wii. It didn’t take much, as all I really needed to do was remove a few references to cacheAsBitmap and replace some setTimeout() calls with pairings of setInterval()/clearInterval(), then republish for Flash Player 7.

It works, and you can play it here:

I finally finished Gears of War last night for the first time. It’s taken me a few months, as I haven’t had a lot of time lately, but it’s been a lot of fun. It’s one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. I only finished it on the Casual setting, but once I finished watching the credits, I started over again into the Hardcore setting.

Of course, I did have some help along the way - I love the co-op multiplayer mode - and Jesse was a big help one night, helping me plow through a few stages and helping me find more COG tags in one night than I’d found total so far.

There were a couple of things that bothered me about how the game ended though. As I was on the train, there was nothing that really made me feel as if I was nearing the end. Once I got to the final fight with Raam, it was a total surprise. Usually there is some kind of buildup to let you know that something good is coming.

Also, it wasn’t exactly the most difficult boss fight - sure, I died a few times - but it seemed like all it took was a few Torque Bow shots to his face, and then once I made it to the turret gun in the center of the car, it was over in about 12 seconds. The whole thing just seemed a little anti-climatic. The rest of the game was so good, that I think I was expecting a little more from the final fight.

Also, Dom is an idiot.

He seemed to fight pretty good for an AI character, but once we reached Raam, he kept charging right up the middle, immediately being cut down by Raam’s gun, or torn to shreds by the kryll surrounding Raam. No matter how many times I tried to tell him to regroup or cease fire, he would just run up and commit suicide. Idiot.

I haven’t tried this out yet, but I will be soon - looks like you can listen for the buttons on your Wiimote in your Flash content on the Wii, so your content can use more than just mouse movement and clicks.

So I finally got to unwrap and play with my new Nintendo Wii on Christmas morning. This thing is a blast! My wife really likes it, as she keeps beating me at everything we play so far, with the exception of boxing. So apparently, the only game I can win is the game in which I beat her senseless. (Something just doesn’t seem right about that… Sorry babe!)

We’ve only been playing Wii Sports against each other so far, and last night just tried out ExciteTruck. That’s a lot of fun as well. It’s definitely not Gran Turismo or Project Gotham Racing, but it’s still a lot of fun. While realism in racing games is nice, sometimes just having a fun arcade racer is even more fun. The hardest part for me when playing ExciteTruck is that you’ve got to almost “forget” how to play a racing game. I’ve become so accustomed to moving only my thumbs when playing, that moving the controller around to steer was actually kinda hard. My wife however, who normally can’t stand racing games, picked it up immediately.

I still haven’t tried Zelda yet, as I want to be able to devote more than a hour to it, which I haven’t had yet. I’ll also be dusting off the Flash 7 Actionscript, seeing what I can get running on that thing as well.

Here’s my Wii Console Code if you’re interested:

How great is this? That great little Flash game Linerider has been picked up for development by inXile Entertainment into a game for both the Nintendo Wii and DS! Having that game on my DS when I’m travelling will be great. I loved Alien Hominid when it was first posted on NewGrounds, and it’s still one of my favorite GameCube games. Here’s hoping we’ll start to see more of these great little games go on to bigger things in the future!

Let’s say you live in Brazil, and want to get your hands on the Playstation 3. For only R$7,980.00 (USD $3,683 at the time of the original post) you can buy your very own 20GB model.

Or, as detailed by Spiceee, for that same amount of money, you could:

Starting with USD $3683:

  • $857 - Round trip tickets to Miami
  • $80 - Taxi to South Beach
  • $80 - Taxi to Best Buy near the Aventura Mall
  • $500 - PlayStation 3 20 GB Model
  • $1500 - Five-night hotel stay
  • $500 - meals & other expenses

Total: $ 3517, with $166 still left over to get a couple of games.

Nice.

Thanks to my brother-in-law who works in shipping at our local Target, (thanks again Scott!) I managed to take home a Wii, after nine stores, and a few too many instances of being the first person in line to not get one. (Why did they always give the last one to the guy in front of me?) Though, as it’s a Christmas present, I’ve got to wait until then to actually play it.

Luckily, I only had to hang out in line for about 2 hours, and it was around 18º this morning. A few of us had our DSs with us, but it was just way too cold to take those gloves off. Mario Kart wasn’t worth losing fingers over.

So, here’s a crappy phone-cam pic to sum things up:

Yes, I was one of the lucky few who managed to score one of the $100 Xbox systems from Amazon last week. I’ve spent most of my life as a Nintendo fan boy, so it felt kinda weird to buy something that wasn’t branded by the big N. Though, a few nights with Gears of War and Project Gotham Racing 3 have helped to wash away those feelings of shame and guilt I’ve been having.

I still need to try out Rainbow Six: Vegas, and because I’m a sucker for cheap, cheesy games, I’ve picked up all three of the Burger King games. Xbox Live is more awesome than thought it would be, and hopefully I’ll be getting the Gold membership soon - my birthday is later this month (hint, hint). So far I’ve just been using the free trials that come with the BK games.

So, if you like, here’s my GamerCard:

As I’m new to the Xbox thing, what games other than the stuff mentioned above would you recommend? Obviously the Halo series, but what else? Also, drop me a line with your gamertags, so I can start playing with some fellow Flashers.

(And yes, I’m still on the lookout for a Wii. Having played one only makes you need it more.) Mission Accomplished

I’ve never felt that asking a person’s age in order to allow access to a website was a very good way to protect our innocent children. Because honestly, if I wanted to visit a site and happened to be “underage”, I would just keep rolling back my birthday until I was “old” enough to enter the site. I just don’t think it’s very effective.

I’m not sure what the best method would be, as I’ve seen sites that have asked for a credit card number - assuming that I only have one of those if I’m over 18. And the last thing I’m going to do is give someone my Visa number, just to view their site. I realize that there ought to be something, I’m just not sure what.

I would make one suggestion though: If you’re going to ‘verify’ a user’s age before granting access to the site, at least make sure that the date actually exists, and is realistic. I’ve seen systems that won’t allow you to visit if you’re over 100 years old, which at least hopes that you’re not typing random numbers, and now I’ve seen this setup at SaintsRow.com. Which doesn’t care that I was born on the 45th day of the 73rd month. The only thing checked here is that I have some kind of value in the date and month fields, and that the year makes me old enough. I figure that if you’re going to bother with one of these systems to start with, at least make it look like you care.

After Keith Peters blogged about his new DS Lite earlier this week, it began a mini-thread of comments with the DS Friend Codes of various Flashers. I added my Metroid Friend Code to the list, and was about to add my MarioKart & Tetris codes, when I realized that they had changed because of the switch from my original DS to the DS Lite. So, for those of you who had my Friend Codes, they’ve changed, and here are the new ones:

MarioKart
236298
044418

Tetris
078834
725012

Metroid
4467-5138-9310

Feel free to add me to your list of friends, but just be sure to leave your code in the comments below.

(Maybe MXNA could get a new feature: list your DS game info along with your feed? MXDS?)
