Just received my Flex & AS 3 posters in the mail the other day. These things are awesome! I’m still trying to figure out how to hang them in my cube, so if you have any good ideas, let me know.
Also, a big thanks to the Flex team for sending me extra posters for our user group to give away in our raffles.
Based on the popularity of the Flex CS3-style icon I posted yesterday (200+ downloads just yesterday), I figured I’d upload the wallpaper I made featuring the logo as well.
The download includes the Fireworks source files for the icon, the wallpaper, and a 1920×1200 sized wallpaper image, that should be plenty big for your displays. This way, you can tweak the wallpaper to fit your display, as well as make a Windows icon if you like.

Eric twitter’d earlier today about FlexBuilder needing a square icon. I’m not sure if this is what he meant, but I liked the idea, and whipped up a CS3-style icon using the Flex logo from the Wheel-o-icons on John Nack’s blog.
Sure, the icon for FlexBuilder may really be the “FB”, and not the “Fx”, but I like the “Fx” more, so that’s the one I made. I’ll try to post an “FB” later.

This icon is for OS X only, and you’ll need to use something like CandyBar, or some other way of changing your application icons.

I’ve also made a wallpaper based on the icon (nothing fancy - I’m not a designer), and have included the Fireworks source files for the icon if you’d like to produce a Windows version.

That’s a beautiful sight:

Thanks Adobe, and everyone on the Flex team!
I’m posting this for those folks that don’t attend your local Flex or Flash Platform User Group.
Yesterday there was a great presentation for the user groups by David George titled Tips and Tricks for Delivering More Responsive Flex Applications.
David is a developer on the Flex team at Adobe, and was able to share a bunch of pointers on how to improve the performance of your Flex applications. The great thing about this presentation is that he not only shares the tip or trick on how to do something, but also why it’s a good idea. He explains a little into the mechanics of how the Flash Player interprets your code at a few points so that you can see why this tip could help your application.
If you’re getting into Flex development, it’s worth checking out. It’s about one hour long.

We knew it was coming eventually, and still is, but at least there’s a new ray of hope coming down from on high, in the form of screenshots of Flex Builder 2 for Mac.
Sho Kuwamoto has posted some screenshots of the still under development build of Flex Builder 2.0 for Mac, and it’s looking great. Obviously still under development in the shots, but the fact that it’s running on OSX gives me all sorts of warm fuzzies.
I can’t wait until this thing hits the rest of us Mac users.
I have updated these instructions to work with the final release of the Flex SDK. The new location is:

Update: Problem solved - looks like it was just a side effect of the merging of Macromedia.com with Adobe.com
I just tried to go to labs.macromedia.com, and was redirected to a sign-up page to receive notifications for the Flash Player 8.5 Alpha. This is happening to every link I find into the labs.
Hopefully it’s just a problem on the server, and not the end of the labs. I’d hate to see those go away.

Not sure how long this has been available, but it’s still great news either way. I just saw this from a message Mike Chambers posted to the FlashCoders list. The free version of the Flex SDK 2.0 is now available in the Adobe Labs.
Earlier this week, Beta 2 of Flex Builder was released, which I’ve downloaded for my Windows machine, and this weekend I was going to spend copying out the libraries needed to compile Flex 2 and AS3 on my Mac. Now I don’t have to do all that. The Flex SDK download now on Labs contains the libraries and the mxmlc compiler you’ll need to use this stuff on your Mac. The download also includes EXE files for you Windows folk.
It’s still no FlexBuilder, which hopefully isn’t too far off, but it’s still a lot better than nothing. It’ll at least save you the work of having to download the Windows files and strip out the stuff you need to compile on your Mac.
Go check it out!
