Because all my friends are on Twitter.

I originally started using Twitter because I got tired of hearing folks go on and on about it, and I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Shortly after, I received an invite to try out Pownce, and almost immediately liked it better, and still do. I prefer Pownce’s ability to post messages flagged as certain types, and the file sharing is a great feature. Also, it’s probably due to having a smaller userbase, but the stability seems to be a little better as well.

So why don’t I stick with Pownce and dump Twitter? I’ve got friends on both services, many on both, but most of them are more active on Twitter. Since both sites have an API, that’s not as huge of a difference as it used to be. In fact, I use Twhirl to post to both sites as a result of those APIs. Twitter’s mobile integration, allowing SMS interaction is nice, but it’s not a deal-breaker for me. Most of my posting happens via Twhirl, and only occasionally via SMS.

After reading How Twitter Could Crash and Burn, I realized that one of the reasons listed for still using Twitter is the main reason that I still use it - it’s where my friends are, and I don’t want to miss what they’ve got to say.

If you’re still using Twitter after trying one of the other sites, why? What are your reasons for sticking around?
